I was keen to test the PNY Mobee Gimbal Stabiliser because creating and publishing vlogs is one of my ongoing goals, so here is my smartphone gimbal review.

One of my professional highlights was being named among the finalists in two categories of the 2019 Travel Media Awards. Being shortlisted as one of five finalists in the Trade Feature of the Year and Blogger/Vlogger of Year categories was a major achievement bearing in mind the number and quality of the entrants. I was there in the Blogger/Vlogger of Year category on the strength of my blogging. Vlogging is something that I’d like to do more of in the future.

Vlogging for social media

People have been telling me for a while that filmmaking is now an essential part of being successful on social media. Consequently, I have started capturing short video sequences on my smartphone. I occasionally film short pieces to camera and post them on the Go Eat Do Twitter and Instagram pages. Ultimately, I know that I could and should be producing professional quality videos to boost engagement with my audience.

As a member of the National Union of Journalists, I recently attended a training course to learn the basics of vlogging. Getting Started in Vlogging was offered by the Federation of Entertainment Unions. The course tutor encouraged participants to start making videos using our smartphones and explained how to upload them to YouTube.

I discovered that gimbals are used to stabilise cameras while they are moved during filming. The PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser is one of several now on the market for use with smartphones.

Using the PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser

Getting started with the PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser proved relatively easy. I’m by no means gifted with great natural technical skills, yet I found using the product straightforward.

The user guide is just eight pages long. After unpacking the gimbal and setting it to charge — using the enclosed Micro-USB cable — I browsed the guide to gain an understanding of how to operate the gimbal. The controls to tilt, pan and zoom the smartphone’s camera are on the unit’s joystick-like handle.

Prior to using the gimbal, I installed the PNY Mobee app. It’s available from the App Store as well as the Google Play Store. After clamping my phone into the PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser I switched on Bluetooth and paired the app with the device. Doing so proved easy. I learnt that my phone could be used in both horizontal and vertical modes.

Filming with a gimbal

I used the gimbal to take a series of still photographs then switched into video mode. Experimenting with zooming, tilting and panning proved fun.

Over the weeks ahead I hope that my video editing skills will develop and I’ll become able to create professional-looking vlogs.

The lightness and simplicity of the PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser makes me confident that I’ll be able to carry the unit with me frequently. That means I’ll be likely to use it.

The battery life of the gimbal is approximately 12 hours. If required, an external power source can be connected by USB.

The PNY Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser has made a positive first impression on me. It has a recommended retail price of £69.99.
